Vancouver Performer Gambles on Live Entertainment Venture

VANCOUVER, July 24 /CNW/ - With a suitcase and a couple of hundred bucks in hand, Leigh Torlage took a Greyhound bus to New York City. An extremely talented dancer, she admits she was one of the lucky ones. In New York, Leigh studied and worked with the best and developed her expertise in a style of dance made famous by Bob Fosse. Soon the gamble paid off and Leigh landed roles in shows such as "West Side Story" and in movies such as Woody Allen's "Bullets over Broadway". After years in the business Leigh took time from her
performing career to start a family but not before slipping in one more gig dancing in the Oscar winning movie "Chicago". Not a minute too soon either since Leigh was five months pregnant by the last day of shooting. If you've seen the movie then you know that the wardrobe did not hide much. Today, seven months pregnant with child number two, Leigh is undertaking her biggest gamble yet. She has created the NY Jazz (named after New York Jazz, the style of dance she teaches) performance company based in Vancouver. "One thing is clear, the talent is here." says Leigh. NY Jazz's cast includes graduates of Victoria's Canadian College of Performing Arts, a former member of Ballet BC and even a BC Lion's cheerleader. Leigh teamed up with voice and acting coach, Simon Isherwood, whose passion and energy compliments Leigh's.
NY Jazz Co.'s first show "Fosse, Fosse, Fosse" appears August 27 and 28 at Performance Works (1218 Cartwright, Granville Island, Vancouver) which will be converted into an intimate cabaret, complete with red linen draped tables and candle light. As the name suggests, the show is a sexy song and dance tribute to Bob Fosse's work. Choreographed and directed by Leigh Torlage.
